What IS Recreational Music Making?
Recreational Music Making (RMM) tears down the age-old idea that music is “for a select group called musicians,” or that you can’t get into it without a huge investment in equipment, time and talent. In short, RMM asserts that making music belongs to everyone.
RMM is distinct from “regular” music making as its purpose is the enjoyment and well-being of the participant and the group, not an artistic or aesthetic outcome. Of particular importance is the fact that participation does not require talent or training. Exemplary performance is not the motive – fun and relaxation are the key drivers.
Sound Utopian? Maybe, but this exciting grass-roots movement known as Recreational Music Making is quickly gaining support and momentum across the country.
What does this all mean?
Imagine a world where everyone makes music…where there’s no pressure to perform, no rigid training schedule…just people playing for the pure enjoyment, health and social benefits that go with it. Imagine a world where music has become an everyday outlet for socializing and living a healthier lifestyle where music is as much a part of every day life as exercise and nutrition.
Recreational Music Making encompasses enjoyable, accessible and fulfilling music-based activities that unite people of all ages regardless of their challenges, backgrounds, ethnicity, ability or prior experience. I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.

Adults who learn to play the piano or organ simply live better. Making music enriches our quality of life and relaxes the mind and soul. Each and every one of us possesses music within our hearts, souls and minds that we need to express. We invite you to express your inner music in one of our Recreational Music Making classes.
As an adult participating in a Recreational Music Making (RMM) program, you are among the largest group of beginning and actively participating music students in the country. If you have always dreamed of playing an instrument, used to play when you were younger and have a desire to play again or simply need a relaxing and fun activity to release you from everyday life, our RMM classes are designed specifically for you.
Our group piano classes at the new HPC School of Music have been really catching on as more people discover the joy that learning music in a supportive, fun environment can bring to their lives!
Music isn’t learning notes and playing them. You learn notes to play to the music of your soul.
